Executive Summary

Experience the soulful craftsmanship of the Post-War Kokeshi era. This authentic Naruko-style Kokeshi is a hand-painted masterpiece by the legendary artisan Shoji Sakurai (1927–2011). Dating back to the 1970s, this piece represents a golden age of Japanese folk art and is becoming increasingly difficult to find in such preserved condition.

The Artist: Shoji Sakurai (櫻井昭二)

Shoji Sakurai was a titan of the Naruko lineage, trained under the masters Manyojo Sakurai and Iwazo Onuma. He was not only a guardian of tradition but also a mentor to the next generation of famous artisans, including Akihiro Sakurai. His works are celebrated for their serene expressions and the "Kiku" (chrysanthemum) motifs that symbolize longevity and rejuvenation.

Key Features & Appeal

  • The "Naruko" Signature: This doll features the iconic "squeaking" head mechanism—a hallmark of genuine Naruko craftsmanship. When the head is turned, it emits a charming sound, a traditional feature loved by collectors worldwide.
  • Artistic Detail: The body is adorned with a hand-painted bold chrysanthemum (Kiku) pattern in vibrant vermillion. The facial expression is remarkably calm, reflecting the "Ma" (the beauty of empty space) found in Japanese aesthetics.
  • Vintage Provenance: Produced in the 1970s, the wood has aged into a beautiful, warm honey-toned patina that only time can create.

Why It’s a Rare Find

Shoji Sakurai’s works are highly sought after since his passing in 2011. As authentic 1970s pieces disappear into private collections, finding a well-preserved original with his signature (on the base) is a rare opportunity for serious collectors of Japanese Mingei (Folk Art).
